Rainer Bonhof is a retired German professional footballer who was born on March 29, 1952, in Emmerich am Rhein, West Germany. He predominantly played as a midfielder during his playing career.
Bonhof began his professional career with his local club, Borussia Mönchengladbach, in 1970 and then moved to Cologne in 1978. He also had stints with Valencia, Racing Santander, and Valencia during his playing career.
With Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bonhof won the Bundesliga title five times and the UEFA Cup once. He was also a part of the legendary West German national team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1974. Bonhof scored the decisive goal in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands, which helped West Germany clinch their second World Cup title.
After retiring from active football, Bonhof went into coaching, and he has managed various teams in the Bundesliga, including Borussia Mönchengladbach and Kaiserslautern. He has also worked as a technical director, and he played a significant role in the establishment of the Bundesliga club, Borussia Mönchengladbach.
